Life is like a test we haven't studied for. However, it's not too late - a manual is available. The Bible can help to guide us through life. On sabbatical

On Monday 16th May I start my Sabbatical. This is an opportunity for me to study, read, reflect and visit places of interest. It is a real privilege to be able to take three months off. It is a time for me to reassess my ministry, to be refreshed and recharged for the work ahead. Although I will be studying and writing, there will not be the same pressure as in normal day to day ministry. So, what am I studying? I have decided to look at what happened to Methodism after John Wesley died. I will need to look at John Wesley’s style of leadership and then look at the men who followed him and how they developed their leadership style and the effects it had on the Methodist people after Wesley’s passed to glory.

Methodist influencers

We like to think that Methodism is democratic but often the movement has been led by a small number of people who influence the majority in the way forward. I want to look at the fifty years after Wesley’s death to see who the leaders were and how the leadership developed and in which direction, they took the Methodist people. What can we learn from that period and what can we learn from the men in leadership? We have seen in our present day how one man can influence a nation to do such terrible harm. We would like to learn from history but sadly the lessons are often ignored and we make the same mistakes again.

Back in August

The three months will soon pass and hopefully, I will be able to report back to you the results of my studies. Sadly, I will miss the celebrations for the Queens Platinum Jubilee and all the events that are happening around the Circuit. But I will look forward to being back with you on 15th August. We have not planned any visits yet but we are hoping to pop over to Epworth Rectory and also to the Primitive Chapel at Engelsea Brook, and I have been told that there is a second-hand bookshop near by which has books on Methodism. We would like to visit the New Room in Bristol and City Road Chapel in London but we do not know whether we will get to those places. A lot of my time will be reading books and looking for information on the internet and writing down the results of my research and reflecting on what this says about the Methodist Church of today and in the future.

I hope you all have a lovely summer and that you will encounter God’s blessings along the way.

Yours in Christ
